TopPop Packaging, a beverage packaging manufacturer in Evesham, is the company responsible for turning part of the Pennsauken Creek red on Tuesday, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said.

The stretch of affected water was in the south branch of the creek near the Woodstream Waste Water Treatment Plant in Evesham, officials said.

An investigation by inspectors from the DEP found that TopPop Packaging improperly dumped red dye into the waste water system, DEP spokesman Lawrence Hajna said.

The agency said it issued the company a notice of violation, but declined to comment on any potential fines it may face.

No immediate ecological impacts have been observed, according to the DEP. The substance was also deemed not hazardous in accordance with federal OSHA standards by the Evesham Municipal Utilities Authority Tuesday.

After the dye was dumped, it went into the Woodstream Waste Water Treatment Plant, which discharges into the creek system, the DEP said.

An executive from TopPop Packaging was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
