For the second time in three months, Hyundai is issuing a major recall for a disturbing problem: exploding seat belt pretensioners. This time around, the safety order is for the automaker’s Venue subcompact SUV-like hatchback, which has proven generally trouble-free in its first generation.

As with May and Junes recalls affecting some 239,000 Accent and Elantra sedans and an additional  17,000 Sorento SUVs from related automaker Kia, respectively, this missive for some 72,500 model-year 2020-22 Venues concerns the front driver- or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners. The parts may explode upon deployment, projecting metal fragments that could strike occupants and result in injury.

And like the May recall, the resolution for dealers is straightforward: Seat belt pretensioners will be secured with a cap for free. Hyundai will begin notifying owners Aug. 26, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 855-371-9460 (Hyundai’s number for this recall is 231), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
